Chances are if you're here you already have a collection of some kind, particularly one related to anime or video games. Maybe you collect porcelain knick-knacks or stamps, because nostalgia is cool? But what if you have some spare cash in your budget and would like to start collecting? There are a lot of reasons to start: as an investment, to show you're a fan of something, to share in the joy with other collectors, ect. But where do you begin?
The main reason I collect is because I'm a fan of something. This show or game touched my life so much that I want EVERYONE to know it. I also love to collect specific characters that I love and support artists I also love. Once you find your reason to collect, the next huge issue is budget.
Deciding a budget is something that very much depends on you, you're income, and your future plans. Collecting solely for investment is risky and can be considered scummy if you delve into scalping territory (buying more than you need at a low price and selling high). If you want to invest buy one or two max of an item. Leave some for everyone else.
The other consideration is what do you want to collect? Trading figures VS scales is a huge price difference. Retro items VS newer items are also something to consider. Work within your budget and start small. As someone who has been collecting for over a decade, I also warn you to not fall into the trap of splurging at the start. You'll quickly start to regret purchases. Space is another thing to consider. Do you live in a small apartment, in your childhood bedroom, or a mansion? Do you want to display figures with the box or without? Do you want to keep boxes? For video games, how much space will those huge collector's editions take up? Do you have the wall space for posters and scrolls? Closet space for that limited edition COSPA coat? I would set aside a small shelf to start. Think about how big the bases are or wingspans. Scales take up a lot of vertical room and often have big stands. Accessories for things like Figmas and Nendoroids are something else to consider. Will you display all those weapons? Where will you store extra faces? Are you planning to make a diorama with your nendos? For DVDs, Blu-Ray, and CDs, consider if there is a thinpack you would rather buy to save space. You may want to opt for DVD over Bluray for price (especially on older series where it doesn't matter as much. Sometimes the content in terms of a dub or video quality can be an issue on even newer releases.) For example, I recent upgraded my Monster Rancher box set: The final thing I want to cover is condition. Maybe there's a plush or DVD box you really want, but the condition isn't the best. You may consider saving for the better condition one or, what a lot of fans do in figure collecting is settle for lesser condition and "upgrade" when the opportunity arises. I've upgraded a lot of my DVDs to Blu-Ray for example. I always put the DVD sets up at a huge discount. This decreases the price of my upgrade and frees up space. This can work for figures, cards, ect. as well!
I hope these tips helped you to start a collection. If there's anything I missed here or a topic you want to see me cover, please comment or drop us an email!
Have you started collecting for the first time? Have you upgraded items in your collection? Let us know, we'd love to chat with other collectors!
